How to Care for Your Wool Blanket: A Simple Guide from Our Farm to Your Home

Wool is one of nature’s finest fibres, soft, breathable, and timeless. Each Yarns by Mount Tibby blanket is woven from the lambswool grown on our own King Country farm and designed to last for generations. With the right care, your blanket will stay just as beautiful as the day it arrived.

We recommend dry clean only

For the best results and to preserve the natural softness of your lambswool, we recommend dry cleaning only. Professional cleaning prevents shrinkage, maintains the weave, and keeps your blanket looking its best.

However, we understand that sometimes hand-washing feels more practical. If you must wash it yourself, the following steps are the safest way to do so.

If you must wash it: the safest way

  1. Use cold water only. Fill a clean tub with cold water and add a small amount of gentle wool detergent.

  2. Soak, don’t scrub. Submerge your blanket and move it slowly through the water. Avoid rubbing, twisting, or wringing.

  3. Rinse gently. Empty and refill with clean cold water until the detergent is gone.

  4. Press, don’t twist. Gently press out excess water using your hands or roll the blanket inside a clean towel.

  5. Lay flat to dry. Shape it neatly on a towel or drying rack away from direct sunlight or heat. Never use a dryer.

This slow, careful method protects the fibres and prevents felting or distortion of the weave.

Storing your blanket

When not in use, fold your blanket and store it in a cool, dry place. Choose a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, and include natural moth repellents such as cedar blocks or lavender. This helps maintain freshness and protects the wool through the warmer months.

Sustainability through care

Caring for your wool blanket means caring for the planet. Wool is renewable, biodegradable, and long-lasting - every time you care for it gently, you extend its life and reduce waste.

From our farm to your home, we hope your blanket remains a trusted companion for many years to come.
